This winter has been interesting. Back in San Antonio, there were loads of places where I could shoot year round, and the scenery would look just fabulous. In Atlanta, however, I haven’t had time to find those sort of “sweet spots.” So I’ve been nervous about shooting outside during the drab winter months. The trees are so bare and everything is so incredibly… brown.
I’m happy to say that my opinion has completely changed during January and February when I decided to take on a few shoots in locations I would’ve previously thought were only good for shooting in the spring/summer/fall. I ended up loving the photos- winter drab and all! I’ve found that the monochromatic scenery really makes the subject pop. A shallow depth of field seems to be key to making this sort of wintery deadness work. So here’s my tip: make sure your subject is wearing a bit of color, shoot at a low f-stop, and embrace the drab scenery!
